Arts Wave Devon

The first POP-up will mean local children and young people can test their talents in fun drama workshops or try out the steps for Flamenco, Bollywood and Street dance styles. No experience is required to join in the fun – just the impulses to learn, share and enjoy!

arts wave devon works with communities to design activities and programmes which engage, support and inspire their participation in Devon’s rich wealth of arts opportunities. Its mission is to enhance wellbeing through creating opportunities to explore, create and play.

The three-year project is a partnership between experienced, local arts and education organisations: Daisi, Dance in Devon, the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and Wolf and Water. Working with Devon County Council, they have collaborated to bring a range of accessible arts opportunities to local people.

The project will see POP-up events appear at festivals, in school playgrounds or at local fetes and fairs, inviting the public to meet professional artists, learn new creative techniques and share artistic experiences with their local neighbourhood. Activities will range from sculpting with clay to forming a spontaneous choir or making a piece of ink art with friends.

Danielle, a participant of a youth dance workshop, said of her experience, “I learnt all the different dance types … I also learnt that I can do anything if I put my mind to it”.

It is hoped that Danielle’s experience will be shared by many as arts wave devon seeks to inspire people to try something new and join in.

In addition, arts wave devon have designed further creative support for children and young people, older people and people with disabilities. arts wave devon will work with key organisations to arrange a series of six tailored sessions, supporting a group to collaborate on a creative project, discover new skills and work towards an objective.

Liz Hill, Director of Daisi, says “We’re excited by the infinite creative potential of working with our arts wave devon partners to engage people in arts activity. Some people are delighted to get involved in spur-of-the-moment creativity on a day out and we celebrate that. But we’re also looking forward to helping groups reveal creativity they didn’t even know was there through longer term engagement and shared design of projects within local communities. A group of young people might work towards performing for an audience, while residents of an older people’s home might wish to host a tea dance.”
