Walks & Cycling
The River Culm, the Grand Western Canal and the Blackdown Hills give Cullompton some of the finest walking and cycling country in Devon — much of it straight from the town centre.
You don’t have to go far to find green space around Cully. Here are some ideas for walks and rides, from a gentle riverside stroll to the big views of the Blackdown Hills. Always check the weather, wear suitable footwear and follow the Countryside Code.
On foot
Town heritage walk
A short, flat, self-guided loop of the historic centre — Fore Street, St Andrew’s Church and the old courts and alleyways, with information boards along the way. Ideal for an hour’s stroll.
Riverside & the mill leat
Follow the River Culm and its mill leat from the edge of town for an easy green walk, alongside the water that once powered Cullompton’s mills.
Culmstock Beacon
A more energetic climb in the Blackdown Hills above Culmstock, rewarded with a thatched beacon hut and sweeping views across the Culm Valley. A short drive from town.
On two wheels
Grand Western Canal
Near Tiverton, the canal towpath is a long, flat, traffic-free route through beautiful countryside — perfect for family cycling and walking alike.
Culm Valley lanes
Quiet country lanes link Cullompton with the surrounding villages (see Local Villages) — great for road cycling, with tea and cake never far away.
Blackdown Hills
For hardier riders, the climbs into the Blackdown Hills National Landscape offer a real challenge and some of the best views in the region.
The wider area is criss-crossed with footpaths and bridleways, and the Blackdown Hills National Landscape sits right on the town’s doorstep. For maps and route ideas, see Visit Mid Devon.
